“THIS IS CHECKMATE”
This piece of wall art was part of my thesis project at the Univeristy of Minnesota in 2013. The design illustrates the lack of privacy in the digital age. When viewed head-on, the piece appears to consist of random or encrypted information. When viewed from either the left or right side, the seemingly random data is decrypted and a readable message suddenly becomes visible.
This aspect of the design is a statement on the vulnerability of all digitized information. Despite the method of encryption, the “secured” information is always accessible to those who possess the right tools.
“We are rapidly entering into the age of no privacy where everyone will be subjected to surveillance at all times. Where there are no secrets from government. This is a checkmate.”
“The essential apparatus of a police state is now in place. At any time the capability of the NSA could be turned on the American people. There wouldn’t be any place to hide.”
